SLN will be holding its 4th Aldermanic Forum. SLN has been providing this opportunity back when Aldermanic elections were won by the appointment of the Ward Committeeman. Things are different now and the 32nd Ward has proven to be an independent force in City politics.

The Forum will be presented as follows:

1) The candidates will begin with a short statement.

2) All candidates will be asked 10-20 predetermined questions. The candidates will be on a clock, so the answers must be short and concise. These questions will be chosen from questions submitted by SLN members.

3) A closing statement will be allowed for all candidates.

There will be time to interact with the candidates before and after the meeting. Submit your questions by Friday, February 4 by email to President David Duggan at president@slneighbors.org.

As usual, the meeting will be held in the basement of St. Alphonsus Church. Enter at 1429 W. Wellington.

And now a few words from our President…

As the holidays dwindle, I want to take a few moments to thank your Board of Directors, fellow Officers and members of the nascent Play Lot committee for their selfless devotion to the cause of improving our corner of the city. Planning the monthly meetings is no mean feat, and the quality of the programs we have had this past year is testament to the board members’ pitch-in attitude. Because many of our members have deeper roots and broader contacts in the area than I, I have depended on their arranging not only the mechanics of our meetings, but also the speakers and the refreshments. Our holiday party last month is a perfect example. Together, they procured the food, made the liquor baskets and secured the gift certificates for our raffles, then set up the tables. Whatever joy came to us during the celebration was solely attributable to the Board.

Despite the earlier announcement, we won’t be having a January meeting. The proprietors of the proposed “Domaine du Vin,” wine-shop-combo–art gallery, say that they cannot go forward under the city’s and ward’s liquor licensing vagaries and strictures (in earlier discussion, they wanted a “place of public amusement” license so that they could host fund-raisers and serve wine). This may be lamentable, but it may be preferable to getting the permits and then finding out that their operation and the surrounding neighborhood were incompatible. Meanwhile, a very vacant corner space on a major thoroughfare remains painfully empty.

If you can’t wait for our next meeting on February 8 for an aldermanic candidates’ forum, the Lakeview Citizens Council will be hosting a 32nd Ward Forum on January 18, at 7PM at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Belmont and Greenview. Until then, I hope that everyone in our boundaries, home-owner and tenant, business owner and customer, student and tradesman, has a prosperous and fulfilling 2011.

We were fortunate to have some of the candidates for Cook County Board President, Lieutenant Governor, and 5th District Representative. It was a spirited discussion and a great opportunity to meet and question the candidates.
