At the October Meeting

Congressman Mike Quigley
The Congressman started out by telling the members that his office has been operational and is open for assistance relating to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Veteran Benefits. He alerted us that if we have an expiring passport to get started on renewing it. He said there is a huge 6-8 month back-log in processing new and renewal of passports.

The Congressman related how the various programs initiated during the Pandemic kept the economy moving along.

Cook County Commissioner Bridget Degnan
Commissioner Degnan has been a regular guest at SLN meetings since being elected three years ago. She always gives an energetic talk and says she could talk all day because she loves her job. She started out by asking how many people in attendance had ever called her office for any type of assistance. Maybe two or three members raised their hands. She said her office is here to help constituents because all politics are local, so don’t be hesitant to call, regardless of the issue.

Other items of note

Victor Giustino – rest in peace September 25, 2021
Long-time SLN member, regular SLN monthly meeting participant and Chicago historian. Victor was truly a man-about town seen by all of us in the neighborhood and various street fairs and events all over the City.

Neighborhood Development and Review Committee (NDRC) is recruiting Committee Members
The NDRC is the most visible Committee of SLN. Working with Alderman Waguespack, the NDRC receives building zoning requests from the Alderman and reviews, suggests revisions and then recommends an approval or a rejection of the zoning change before the issue is brought to the SLN membership for a vote. This process has helped ensure that quality zoning change requests are being presented in our SLN neighborhood. The NDRC is looking to expand the Committee. The NDRC deals with very experienced developers, attorneys and architects, so some qualifications in dealing in those areas would be helpful. Contact SLN at our email address: info@slneighbors.org with some information about yourself if you are interested. NOTE – you must be a SLN member for at least one year to qualify for a Committee position.
